Imagine ending a relationship on a whim after a heated argument or impulsively accepting a big project because you felt energized in the moment, only to later feel stressed and overwhelmed. Stress, lack of sleep, or low self-confidence can make it easier to slip into Emotion Mind, making balanced judgment a challenge. Emotion Mind isn’t all bad — it’s essential for emotional expression and connection with others — but unchecked, it may lead to regretful choices.
2. Reasonable Mind: Driven by Logic and Facts
Reasonable Mind is where facts and logic take center stage. In this state, we approach situations analytically, relying on planning, structure, and order. It’s a great mindset for organizing tasks, budgeting, or following a step-by-step plan. However, staying in Reasonable Mind too long may cause emotional disconnect. For example, coming home and immediately diving into a to-do list without acknowledging loved ones can create distance. Reasonable Mind is practical, but relying solely on it can strain relationships and reduce life’s joy and spontaneity.
3. Wise Mind: The Perfect Blend of Emotion and Logic
Wise Mind is where Emotion and Reasonable Minds meet. It’s a place of balance — a state where we respect our feelings and values while considering logic and facts. Wise Mind feels like calm intuition, a kind of inner voice that guides us to make thoughtful, grounded decisions. Here, choices “feel right” not just on an emotional level but in a way that considers the bigger picture. Accessing Wise Mind can help in everything from career decisions to handling disagreements. It’s the state we aspire to when we seek clarity, resilience, and inner peace.
Practical Ways to Cultivate Your Wise Mind
Even though Wise Mind may not always come naturally, there are simple ways to practice accessing it. According to Marsha Linehan, DBT’s founder, everyone has a Wise Mind that can be cultivated with practice.
1. Mindful Breathing for Wise Mind Focus
Find a quiet space, sit comfortably, and focus on your breathing. As you inhale, mentally say “wise,” and as you exhale, say “mind.” This mindful breathing creates a peaceful, centered state that opens a path to Wise Mind.
2. Ask Wise Mind for Guidance
When facing a decision, try asking yourself reflective questions like “What feels right for me in this situation?” or “What would bring me peace?” Then, take a few deep breaths and listen for answers that feel genuine and true to you.
3. Use Core Mindfulness Skills
DBT’s skills — observe, describe, participate, and do so non-judgmentally, one-mindfully, and effectively — help build Wise Mind by encouraging us to stay present, view thoughts objectively, and act with purpose.
4. Identify Your Current Mind State
Before making a decision, take a moment to check in with yourself. Are you in Emotion Mind, Reasonable Mind, or somewhere in between? Recognizing your starting point can help you shift into Wise Mind and respond more intentionally.

Life’s ups and downs will naturally shift us between different states of mind. With practice, though, mindfulness can help us reach Wise Mind more often, even in stressful times.
